Marie was born in Philadelphia, attended South Philadelphia High School, and worked for years alongside Hank in the office of Custom Auto Body, a business she courageously managed for years after Hank’s death. She also was a long-time resident of New Jersey, and lived in Clementon, Cherry Hill, Marlton and Medford. She was active in her church communities, the Lioness Club, and later in the NJ Vegetable Growers Association with Rocky.
Anyone who knew Marie would agree that she was kind, generous, unselfish, loving, supportive and deeply devoted to her family and friends. She traveled the world and always leant a helping hand, especially with her grandkids, who spent many hours at “nonna’s.” And of course, there’s the food. . . oh, the food . . . She was a tremendous hostess and cook, as anyone who ever ate her homemades, meatballs, bonzetta or other Italian delicacies would attest. Whenever you were at Marie’s house, you always felt like it was a special occasion and you were the center of the universe. She also was mom to several pets, including her beloved and quirky Husky, Caesar, during the Cherry Hill part of her journey, and he was as smitten with her as we all were.
Marie was beautiful. Always impeccable, from head to toe, and from the inside out: a true role model for us to emulate, a sunbeam of hope and love and a warm reminder of life lived well in a world that is often unkind and cruel.
When the stroke and dementia hit, it was hard to witness. But don’t remember her that way. Close your eyes, and see her at her best, perhaps on the patio of her Cherry Hill home on a warm, sunny day . . . a barbecue . . . laughing with her sisters (each talking in unison), while the extended Del Conte clan play wiffle ball as Sinatra sings “Summer Wind” and the bees buzz around the Wisteria. . .
